Twenty One Pilots Storm Back with 'Jumpsuit' and 'Nico and the Niners': Listen

Band announce new album, “Trench,” as well as world tour.
Wednesday (July 11) was a very good day for Twenty One Pilots fans, as it brought two new songs, a video and news about a new album and world tour. After a year of silence the duo stormed back with the dub-inspired track ”Jumpsuit” and the reggae rap tune “Nico and the Niners.” Both songs are slated to appear on the band's upcoming fifth studio album TRENCH, due out on Oct. 5.
The first taste of the follow-up to 2015's Grammy-winning BLURRYFACE finds singer Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun diving back into their patented mash-up of pop, hip-hop and rock, with Joseph once again plumbing the dark regions of his psyche. “I can't believe how much I hate/ Pressures of a new place roll my way/ Jumpsuit, jumpsuit cover me/ Jumpsuit, jumpsuit cover me/ I crumble underneath the weight,” Joseph sings over a throbbing bass line and Dun's delicate drums in the slow-bouncing first verse of ”Jumpsuit” before he breaks into a falsetto break in the song's second half as it careens to a thundering end.
With a bouncier, poppier feel, “Nico and the Niners” throbs with a reggae groove, and, seemingly establishing a theme, also references a jumpsuit. “I'm heavy, my jumpsuit is on steady/ I'm lighter when I'm lower, I'm higher when I'm heavy, ooooh/ I'm so high, my jumpsuit takes me so high/ I'm flying from a fire, from Nico and the Niners, oooh,” Joseph sings on the chorus of the song.
In addition to dates for a world tour slated to kick off on Oct. 16 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, the band also released a video for “Jumpsuit” directed by frequent collaborator Andrew Donoho. In the clip Joseph is stranded on a rocky shore surrounded by masked figures on the cliffs above as he flees from a mysterious figure in a red cloak giving chase on horseback.
