Blurring the skinny line between genres, Phosphorescent explored all the pieces from folks pop to nation in his mellow "New Birth in New England" efficiency at The Late Late Show on Tuesday evening (Oct. 2).

A head-nodding, foot-stomping jam, the monitor narrates Phosphorescent chief Matthew Houck's first encounter with a lady at a bar, and extra deeply, his expertise turning into a first-time father. "It was the very first time you laid eyes on me/ Your momma burst into tears/ We had been shaking within the medical basement/ And I suppose all the pieces was on arrears," he sang in his laid-back fashion, his eyes shaded by a black baseball hat.

A fusion of sentimental rock with a style of jam and nation, Houck finger-picked his guitar as a six-piece back-up band added vivid guitars, bongos, dueling keyboards and steady-on drums beneath his laconic singing.
