Mariah Carey to Receive Honor at 2021 African American Film Critics Association Awards

Mariah Carey is an icon, a legend, and she is the moment. The songbird supreme will be known as an innovator when she accepts the special achievement award of the same name from the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) at its 12th annual ceremony on April 7.

The coveted honor will recognize Carey for her unique ability to be front and center when it comes to her legacy as an all-around musician who can implement her epic hits and album cuts flawlessly through visual experiences. 

AAFCA CEO and President Gil Robertson said in a press release, “Mariah Carey is often recognized as a global icon for her musical gifts, but rarely is she celebrated for the visual storytelling in her music videos and specials. As an artist who is all-hands-on-deck in not just crafting her songs, but also in curating and creating the imagery surrounding them, Carey is especially deserving of the 2021 AAFCA Special Achievement Innovator Award.”

Carey previously directed music videos for her hit singles “Fantasy” and “Always Be My Baby,” as well as co-directed others like “The Roof” and “I Don’t” featuring YG.

This year, Carey has kept the momentum going strong for her #MC30 campaign. She released EPs to commemorate three albums, including E=MC², The Emancipation of Mimi, and Charmbracelet.

The Rarities, her 2020 album of vaulted tracks and Daydream World Tour renditions, received a standing ovation on Rated R&B’s annual year-end list of the top R&B albums.
