On Wednesday (May 15), Alabama's female Governor Kay Ivey signed the nation's most restrictive abortion law, one that essentially outlaws abortions, even cases of incest and rape. The new law — which won't take effect for six months — makes it a Class A felony to perform an abortion, with doctors facing a prison sentence of 10-99 years under the provisions voted on by an all-male slate of 25 Republican Alabama senators.
Missouri, Kentucky, Georgia and Mississipi are all considering or in the process of passing similar anti-abortion legislation as the "pro-life" movement enjoys a strong wave of institutional support, with a number of "heartbeat" bills advancing across the nation in what many see as a precursor to a long-sought Supreme Court challenge to the landmark 1973 Roe V. Wade ruling that legalized abortion.
Many artists and musicians have made it known that they do not count themselves among those supporters.
Below, see messages about how some of our most popular cultural icons view the law.

Women should unequivocally have the right to choose what happens to their bodies. MY BODY. MY CHOICE. FUCK THE PATRIARCHY!!! #AbortionRights

Not your body. Not your choice. No justification needed. No man should be making such a fundamental decision on a womans body. How is it that abortion gets banned before guns? Our rights need to be heard. And we have a right to be outraged. In solidarity with my sisters. pic.twitter.com/zd02EVmCNx

The abortion ban in Alabama is an extremely scary step in the wrong direction. All the horrific stories I’ve read, about how girls and women who get pregnant through incest or rape now risk going to jail longer than… https://t.co/RVDFR4kEzw

if you’re a man and you think that The Handmaid’s Tale is a well-crafted show but maybe not the best way for a modern society to operate then it’s a really good time to start speaking out against the current war on women’s bodies/minds. we need your allyship.

I’ve been reading about the Alabama abortion ban all morning and trying to articulate how terrifying + insane this all is but all I’m left with is this boiling feeling of helplessness + anger + fear in my chest.
how do you celebrate your mother and then seek to control her?

Fuck the politicians who would take away a woman’s right to choose what is best for her body, her health and her well being. The efforts to regress will not stick for long.

Assigning felonies to people who seek abortion is a means to assure that those with that autonomy are stripped of their right to vote. And therefore perpetuates the cycle.
