Kelly Clarkson stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote her new talk show and opened up about encouraging Taylor Swift to re-record her old masters.

During the chat, Clarkson told host Jimmy Fallon that the idea for her viral tweet to her fellow superstar amidst Swift's battle with Scooter Braun actually came from her mother-in-law Reba McEntire.

“We saw each other, actually, after I did that,” Clarkson said. “I wasn’t really trying to defend or offend anyone. It was more of, like, Reba told me she did that…like, that was it. She told me she did that, she wanted to own her masters, and I was like, ‘If it’s that important to you, find a way.’ And she re-cut all her music and did the same musicians, same everything. That’s where I got the idea, yeah.”

While the American Idol winner explained that she understands why Swift would want to own her music, she doesn’t necessarily feel the same way about her own catalog of chart-topping hits.

“Taylor’s like the artist…she’s been writing since she was a little girl, right?” Clarkson said. “So it’s kind of her diary, so I get why she’d want to. I don’t really care about owning my masters or not. I’m just like, ‘Whatever, I’m gonna sing ‘em till I’m dead, it’s fine.’ It’ll be fine. And then somebody can make money off of it, I don’t care…like I wrote, like, half, a little more than half my stuff. And hers is a hundred percent of it, so it’s hers. So I can see how it could matter to her.”
