Legendary movie director John Singleton has died.

Singleton suffered a devastating stroke on April 17th that left him in a coma for over a week. The movie director’s family confirmed on Monday (April 29) that he was taken f life support and has passed away at the age 51. The film and the hip hop community have been reacting to his death with heavy hearts. His family sources say he died peacefully while being surrounded by friends and family.

“John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends,” Singleton’s family said ( CNN). “We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all the love and support they showed him during this difficult time.”

John Singleton is best known for his directorial role in classic films like “Boyz N The Hood,” “Baby Boy,” “Poetic Justice,” “Shaft,” and “2 Fast 2 Furious.”

Singleton became the youngest person to receive an Oscar nomination for best director for “Boyz n the Hood,” in 1992 when he was only 24 years old. He also became the first African American o receive a nomination in that category after the film became a massive hit. “Boys N The Hood” was primarily about his personal experience growing up in South Central Los Angeles.

Over the years he released other films and branched out into television with work on “Empire,” FX’x “Snowfall,” “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson,” and “Billions.”

John Singleton was 51 at the time his death. Rest in peace.
