Jazmine Sullivan is a fan of first-quarter music releases. The lyrical master and gutsy vocalist has revealed the title and release date for her first full-length project since 2015’s Reality Show. Heaux Tales arrives on January 8 via RCA Records.

Sullivan uploaded a minute-teaser on YouTube that featured the date of the next project in its description. In the striking clip, which accentuates Sullivan’s natural beauty, she provides details on the inspiration behind Heaux Tales.

“I wrote Heaux Tales to give voice to every woman,” she said. “We’re deserving of respect whether we as a CEO of a company or if we strippin. It’s about unity. It’s about boldness. It’s about ownership and confidence and also vulnerability and self-reflection.”

She continued, “It’s about a woman deciding how she wants to present herself to the world and not being told or influenced by anyone but her gotdamn self. It’s about women writing their own imperfect stories unashamed.”

Already, Sullivan, who recently performed at the 2020 Soul Train Awards, has released two songs from Heaux Tales: “Pick Up Your Feelings” and “Lost Ones.”

She explained the creation of the former Nova Wav-authored track to Claudia Jordan at the 2020 Soul Train Awards virtual press conference. “I don’t really work with a lot of songwriters a lot but I heard the demo and was like, ‘I need this flavor on my project,’” Sullivan revealed to Jordan. “I went and sang it and it was so good. I was so glad I stepped outside of my comfort zone to work with different writers.”

Last month, Sullivan released a deeply rich version of “The First Noel.”

As previously mentioned, Sullivan’s latest studio effort was Reality Show. The album was featured in Rated R&B’s 50 best R&B albums from the 2010s round-up.
