Hailee Steinfeld unveiled her new single “Afterlife” on Thursday (Sept. 19).
The sparkling new track finds the Academy Award nominee pondering whether a love will live on after death — a sentiment she said parallels her upcoming role as lauded poet Emily Dickinson.
“This record has themes reflective of Emily Dickinson’s desires,” Steinfeld told Apple Music’s Beats 1's Zane Lowe. “There’s a line in the song that says ‘immortality is bliss’ and it reminded me a lot of Emily Dickinson’s poems. She lived during a time where women were forbidden from voicing their opinions, so the majority of her work wasn’t published until after she died. The inability to express herself fully in life, but to be so revered beyond her death…Her writing continues to be remembered and relevant to this day, making her immortal.”
The new track will be featured on the show, which Steinfeld dished will be “driven by contemporary and urban music” despite being set in the 1850s. During the interview, the actress explained that filming the series — which she’s also executive producing — inspired her to write her latest music project, which will be released sometime next year.
Dickinson will premiere Nov. 1 on Apple’s new streaming service. Check out “Afterlife” below.
