From Selena Gomez’s ‘Rare’ Release to Mac Miller’s ‘Good’ Vibes, Vote for Your Favorite New Music Friday Drop
102 This New Music Friday (Jan. 10) applauds the unabashed return of Selena Gomez, mourns the loss of Mac Miller all over again with his first posthumous single and ends the wait for a new Drake and Future collaboration.
Rare delves into Gomez's trial and tribulations — first heard in her Streets Talkin Hot 100 No. 1 hit "Lose You to Love Me" and echoed in tender tracks like "People You Know" and "Cut You Off" — and celebrates her triumph in the carefree choruses of "Dance Again" and "Fun." Another artist with a comeback plan is Ozzy Osbourne, who stirs things up in a surprisingly soft pop ballad (for the Prince of Darkness) with Elton John titled "Ordinary Man," which shares the same name as his upcoming 12th studio album, due Feb. 21.
On a sad note, Miller's new music is here without him, as "Good News" seems to contradict the single's own namesake. The first song from his posthumous album Circles, which is set to be released next Friday, stretches out the late rapper's thoughts over a six-minute gentle melody with delicate guitar plucking in the background.
Also in the rap arena, "Life Is Good" brings back frequent collaborators Drake and Future, and the star-studded music video juxtaposes their everyday complaints ("Haven't done my taxes, I'm too turnt up," Drake laments) with their extraordinary flexes ("Hunnid thousand for the cheapest ring on a n—a finger, lil' bi—, yeah," Future boasts). Megan Thee Stallion and Normani also drop an icy collab titled "Diamonds" from the Birds of Prey soundtrack.
