Florence + The Machine Debut Celtic Ballad ‘Jenny of Oldstones’ on ‘Game of Thrones’: Listen

Florence is the only artist who will be featured in the final season of the show.

Florence + The Machine debuted their version of the original Game of Thrones song "Jenny of Oldstones" on Sunday night (April 21) during the closing credits of the second episode of the HBO series' final season. The track, produced by Thomas Bartlett, was recorded after singer Florence Welch was personally asked by show creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss to be the only artist featured in the final run of the epic drama, according to a press release.

“We’ve always been huge fans of Florence’s music, and the Season 2 trailer with her song ‘Seven Devils’ was possibly the most powerful we’ve ever had,” Benioff and Weiss said in a statement. “So the opportunity to hear her otherworldly voice on our show was always at the forefront of our minds. We’re still pleasantly shocked that she agreed to sing ‘Jenny of Oldstones,’ and we’re in love with the result.”

"High in the halls of the kings who are gone/ Jenny would dance with her ghost/ The ones she had lost and the ones she had found/ and the ones who had loved her the most," Florence Welch sings over the gentle Celtic melody of the song performed a cappella in the episode by Podrick Payne (Daniel Portman). The ballad was written by GoT composer Ramin Djawadi, Weiss, Benioff and Thrones book series author George R. R. Martin.

“When I first heard the song it sounded like a Celtic lullaby to me,” Florence said in the statement. “Celtic music has always been in my blood, so I felt like I could do something with it. The magic and ritual in Game of Thrones, not to mention the costumes, have always appealed to me. I am honoured to be a part of the final season.”

The new Florence track comes on the heels of Friday's release of "Power is Power" by SZA, the Weeknd and Travis Scott, which appears on the upcoming all-star compilation For The Throne (Music Inspired by the HBO Series Game of Thrones).
