The Philadelphia Eagles were dealt a blow the other day when quarterback Nick Foles suffered a shoulder strain on Thursday night. With his injury status in limbo, a few “rustier” quarterbacks are getting their share preseason snaps from the lower reaches the depth chart. Foles himself the backup, and probably the league’s best in that role, was keeping the seat warm while Carson Wentz rehabilitated his ACL injury.
The news out Philadelphia is that Wentz has been ruled eligible to partake in 11-aside scrimmages with his teammates. The Eagles’ coaching is thereby instructed those who participate in those drill with him, to tread carefully given the circumstances. The team-wide goal is still to be patient with Wentz’ recovery, afforded to them by the success-rate their backup Nick Foles. Unfortunately Foles is also nursing a hangover, so the team may be forced to field a skeleton-version their lineup in week 1.
There is no plan for Wentz to play in the preseason, nor do they expect him to be ready for week 1. In fact, Coach Pederson has effectively ruled him out for week 1 after consulting with the team’s medical staff. Over in the AFC East, the Buffalo Bills just lost their quarterback AJ McCarron, clearing the way for rookie signal caller Josh Allen to assert himself.
